Meet Bradley Pye, HGV Driver and HIAB Crane Operator at CPS
Date: 30/01/25
For Bradley Pye, joining Central Power Services was an opportunity to take his skills as an experienced HGV driver to the next level.
Now a qualified HIAB crane operator, he is playing a key role in delivering critical back-up power equipment across the UK.
Read on to find out how Bradley is making an impact just a few short months into his new role.
Opportunities for upskilling
Bradley joined CPS in November 2024, bringing with him experience as a Class 1 HGV driver in general haulage. The chance to take on additional qualifications was what first drew him to apply.
“CPS gave me the opportunity to get my ADR qualification,” Bradley explained. “They funded a week-long course that allows me to transport hazardous substances and goods, like the diesel that is used to fuel back-up generators.”
Bradley has also completed a lorry loader course to operate HIAB cranes – large cranes mounted on trucks. This has enabled him to take on more complex tasks working with CPS’s extensive fleet, including the two new state-of-the-art Scania crane-mounted trucks.
As well as these two certifications, Bradley has already completed some additional courses through CPS, including forklift operation and harness and lanyard safety.
A more varied and complex role
As one of the newest members of the CPS team, Bradley’s days are as varied as the company’s customers.
“I really enjoy the mix of different jobs and using the crane.” he says. “Some customer sites are local to our North West headquarters, but I experienced a callout to the south of London in my first week. No two weeks are the same.”
There are more challenging tasks than safely delivering to a destination, too. “When operating the crane you need to think through challenges like telephone wires and overheads, working inside of a building, or whether the ancillary equipment can be safely placed on the ground. It’s more complex than what I used to do when I was driving all day. It’s more rewarding because I get to see more of what customers need from CPS and how we support them.”
When not out on a site visit, Bradley works at the depot. “It’s helped me to feel much more part of the team than when I was purely driving lorries.”
Growth and support
Although Bradley is only a couple of months into his new role, he is looking forward to building a long-term career at CPS. “This was the step up I was looking for” he says. He is looking forward to his first independent site visits, hoping to take on the additional responsibility in the coming months.
“Everyone I’ve worked with has been welcoming, and the drivers I have been learning with have been helpful and supportive. I’d really recommend that people consider applying for a role with CPS. It’s been such a short space of time and I already have multiple additional qualifications and feel part of the team.”
